INDIGENOUS SOMERSET BLUE LIAS STONE SOMERSET
Blue Lias stone is a geological formation laid down in the landscape of Somerset and Dorset around 200 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Evidence of its antiquity is contained within it in the form of fossils, especially ammonites.
We quarry this remarkable type of limestone here at Hadspen and ship it around the country for use in a wide variety of building and landscaping projects, especially cut and finished for flooring and paving purposes.
Blue Lias stone is made up of layers of limestone and shale, from which it gets its characteristic, attractive blue-grey colour. This superb, hard-wearing stone can be found underfoot in hundreds of historic buildings, and making up pretty pathways and patios in public and private gardens. It is in high demand today for new builds and renovation projects in both the residential and commercial construction sector.
